At length I found someone to watch me shoot it; it turned out my thumb was slipping a little as I shot, so after a few rounds I no longer made good contact with the grip safety.
The Springfield Armory XDS 9mm was recommended, but wanted to get more than the gun shop owner's opinion. I've had my XDS for about a year, and have carried it regularly for about 4 months now.
Another thing to keep in mind is that springfield is running a promo right now for purchase of new handguns. It's more about aesthetics, brand loyalty and which one you prefer to hold and shoot. The Walther shoots the best, but it's more expensive and has 1 less capacity.
The only other con that most people bring up is that it's a bit heavy compared to other popular single-stack 9mm's.
If you get a decent belt and holster, though, it shouldn't be too noticeable. It came with a 7rd and 8rd mags and I picked up a 9rd. I have it's big brother as a competition pistol with somewhere in the 5 figures worth of rounds through it. Only issue I've had is having to swap out two springs recently due to lots of use. I like it, and it shoots well, but the one thing I would caution you about is that you have to grip it right to fire it.
That and it being down a round compared to the Shield it made for a fairly easy decision.
